First Connection 88
students from all regions of Ontario participated in the program from 1998 to
2001. During four consecutive summers, First Connection placed Grade 12
students as interns with some of Ontario’s most successful businesses.
As interns, participants had opportunities rarely available to high school students.
Students reported that the experience was extremely valuable in helping them
to gain knowledge, experience and contacts. In fact, several continued to
work for their host companies on a part-time basis and in subsequent summers.
Others said their experience influenced their education and career choices
for the future. First
Connection was organized in 2003 to provide career-development for at-risk
youth in Toronto, London and Ottawa. The program supports 16 and 17 year olds
who are in need of assistance as identified by partner community agencies.
